Resumo

The extraordinary gambler-philanthropist David Walsh energises Hobart with more than MONA, his Museum of Old and New Art. The private institution opened in January 2011 while a public festival, initiated as a warm-up by Walsh a few years earlier, was also in progress. That annual midsummer 'MONA FOMA' (Mona Festival Of Music and Art) is based at Hobart's downtown pleasure zone on Sullivans Cove and Salamanca Place. Nick Cave has been a favourite star turn. Then last year, to encourage all-seasons festivity, Walsh initiated a counterposed 'Dark Mofo' (Dark MONA FOMA), scheduled to coincide with the winter solstice.
