Resumo

This work analyzes the role played by the “second-line” leaders in the consolidation of populist processes, in order to establish a comparison between the intermediaries of Varguism and Peronism in their relations with the press. This comparison may contribute to the understanding from a new perspective the links between the press and populist political processes. For the Brazilian case, the role played by Lourival Fontes –during Vargas’ first term (1930-1945) –and Samuel Wainer’s role–Vargas second administration (1951-1954). For the Argentinian case, the roles of Carlos Vicente Aloe and Raúl Apold, two relevant figures in the relationship of the first Peronism (1946-1955) with the press, are analyzed.
