ResumoR I C H A R D H. G R A C R O F T Brigham Young University Research in Progress in Western American Literature While the number of doctoral dissertations completed during the past year and listed in Dissertation Abstracts remains about the same as last year, it may be of interest to note that most of these works continue to deal thematically with the literary West, while only a few focus their attention on specific Western authors. The trend to probe the roles of women as participants and as Western authors remains healthy, as does the newer trend of examining the image of the West in the film. But, through deep arroyos or across high plateaus, the imaginations of West ern scholars continue to amaze and delight. Even a cursory sweep of the horizon of titles reveals fascinating areas of investigation and under scores again a rich variety and range of scholarship in Western Ameri can literature.
