Bernardo de Brito: A Misunderstood Portuguese Chronicler

EnglishThis article on Bernardo de Brito seeks to analyze his historiographical work with the aim of refuting the traditional conclusion that he was opposed to the Habsburg ki ngs ruling Portugal. I first describe the very close relationship Brito had with the court. Following this, I focus mainly on the four aspects of his work: the mythical population of the Iberian Peninsula, the ancient Spanish history, the splitting of the Portuguese County from the Leonese kingdom, and the Portuguese crisis of succession from 1383 to 1385, which ended with the enthronement of the Avis dynasty. portuguesEste artigo sobre Bernardo de Brito tem o objetivo de analisar a sua obra historiografica para recusar a conclusao tradicional que se encontrava em oposicao aos reis portugueses da casa de Habsburgo. Primeiro, descrevemos a relacao proxima que Brito tinha com a corte. Depois, enfocamo-nos principalmente em quatro aspetos da sua obra: a populacao mitica da Peninsula Iberica, a historia espanhola antiga, a separacao do condado de Portugal do reino de Leao e a crise sucessoria portuguesa de 1383 a 1385, que terminou com a entronizacao da dinastia de Avis.
