Sousa. The conference was held at the Auditorium of Biblioteca Municipal Almeida Garrett, Porto, Portugal, from April 11 to 15, 2016, and preceded by a workshop on AFM training (held on April 11). Founded in June 2006, after a first seminal French speaking conference held on the same topics in Nîmes on June 2004, AFMBioMed Conference brings researchers and students around the world to discuss the latest scientific results of atomic force microscopy in life science and medicine.1, 2 AFMBioMed organized its first international meeting in Barcelona, Spain, in spring 20073 followed, every 18 months, by Monterey, CA, USA, in fall 2008,4 Crveni otok (Red Island) near the Adriatic City of Rovinj, Croatia, in spring 2010,5 Paris in summer 2011,6 Shanghai in spring 2013,7 and San Diego in Fall 2014.8 Members of the scientific committee for the seventh edition of the meeting include past and present organizer's chairmen Susana R. Sousa (i3S|INEB, Porto, Portugal), Adam Engler (UCSD, San Diego, USA), Jun Hu (SINAP, Shanghai, China), Sanjay Kumar (University of California, Berkeley, USA), Daniel Navajas (Universitat de Barcelona, Barcelona, Spain), Simon Scheuring (Institut National de la Santé et de la Recherche Médicale (INSERM) U1006, Marseille, France), Vesna Svetlicic (Rudjer Boskovic Institute, Zagreb, Croatia), the original founders of the conference Pierre Parot (CEA/DRF, BIAM Cadarache, France) and Jean-Luc Pellequer (CEA/DRF, Institut de Biologie Structurale, Grenoble, France) as well as the four invited chairmen: Hermann Schillers (University Münster, Germany), Malgorzata Lekka (Polish Academy of Sciences, Poland), Peter Hinterdorfer (Johannes Kepler University, Austria), and Phil Williams (Laboratory of Biophysics and Surface Analysis, School of Pharmacy, University of Nottingham, UK). Local organizers included Bruker Nano's Marie-Lise Perrault and Ana Paula Pêgo, Cristina Ribeiro, Fernando Jorge Monteiro, Isabel Amaral, Manuela Brás, Maria Lázaro, Mário Barbosa, Pedro Granja all from i3S|INEB as well as the i3S staff members Anabela Nunes, Natália Lima and Rita Matos. Partners of the event include the French Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission (CEA/DRF, France), i3S|INEB (Instituto de Investigação e Inovação em Saúde|Instituto de Engenharia Biomédica. Financial contribution from Bruker Nano, Wiley, Luso-American Foundation, University of Porto, Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia, and Câmara do Porto is gratefully acknowledged. We also would like to kindly acknowledge sponsors from the Porto Convention Bureau, Castelbel, and Palmtop. The meeting welcomed 12 invited talks from internationally renowned speakers, 46 oral presentations, and 35 poster presentations (129 participants altogether). The 2016 program also featured vast geographical diversity with presentations from 18 different countries across 4 continents! Both oral and poster presentations brought closer specialists from cell biology and medical science to materials science and physics, to discuss the latest technological advances and applications of AFM in the field of bioimaging, mechanobiology, health and disease, and nanomedicine. Within these sessions, invited lectures were given by Ana Paula Pêgo (i3S|INEB, Porto Portugal), Simon Scheuring (INSERM/Aix-Marseille Université, France), Bart Hoogenboom (London Centre for Nanotechnology, University College London, UK), Manfred Radmacher (University of Bremen, Institute of Biophysics, Germany), Nuno C. Santos (Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade de Lisboa, iMM Lisboa, Portugal). Prizes for best oral and poster presentation were awarded by the JMR Young Investigator Awards: for the best oral presentations: Livie Dorwling-Carter (ETH, Zürich), Nicolas Schierbaum (Institute of Applied Physics, University of Tübingen) and Filomena A. Carvalho (IMM, Lisboa) and for best poster presentations: Sabrina Pisano (IRCAN INSERM U1081 - CNRS UMR7284, Nice) and Nilza Ribeiro (i3S, INEB, Porto). New to this Conference was the AFM image competition. As part of the Conference, we invited the AFM users to select their best AFM images to a competition for the best image and selected images were showcased during the meeting. The winner was Dr. Hermann Schillers for his image called "coast line" (http://www.afmbiomed.org/afmbiomed-scientific-image-competition.aspx) The meeting also hosted a full day of a pre-Conference AFM hands-on training workshop by Bruker Nano. The meeting was highlighted by a Visit and a banquet dinner at "Taylor's" Port Wine Cellars, overlooking the Douro River and Porto, a world heritage city. Bruker Nano also sponsored a reception followed by a dinner at "Árvore" Restaurant. As a result of the science presented at the meeting, we are pleased to include the following manuscripts in this issue of the Journal of Molecular Recognition: Ketaki Apte, Reimer Stick and Manfred Radmacher Mechanics in human fibroblasts and progeria: Lamin A mutation E145K results in stiffening of nuclei DOI: 10.1002/jmr.2580 (edited by JL Pellequer) Thi-Huong Nguyen Single-molecule force spectroscopy applied to heparin-induced thrombocytopenia DOI: 10.1002/jmr.2585 (edited by JL Pellequer) Ricardo H.
