Resumo

The year 2018 marks the centennial anniversary of the Third Series of the American Journal of Ophthalmology. Former Editor in Chief Frank Newell summarized the AJO's lengthy and difficult gestation in his editorial, "The American Journal of Ophthalmology—100 Years," with this note about the formation of the Third Series: "In the July 1917 number of Ophthalmic Literature, Jackson described the new journal as including the Annals of Ophthalmology, Ophthalmic Record, Ophthalmology, Ophthalmic Year Book, and Ophthalmic Literature." He further explained, "Adolph Alt, of St. Louis, was the founder [in 1884] and he continued as editor for the next 34 years. … Late in 1917 Alt developed myocarditis and, in failing health, consented to join in the combined journals that form The American Journal of Ophthalmology, which continues to this day." 1 Newell F.W.
