ResumoTHE COUNCIL IN TRULLO (691-692): A STUDY OF THE CANONS RELATING TO PAGANISM, HERESY, A N D THE INVASIONS Frank R. Trombley The surviving d o c u m e n t s of the Council in Trullo (691-692) are an extremely useful source for the history of seventh century Byzantium. T h e Acta have unfortunately perished, but the historian does have at his disposal the 102 C a n o n s published by the Council, in addition to the synodal list of metropolitans and bishops who adhered to its enactments. Ecclesiastical legislation has great importance as a source for this period, because annalistic accounts like the chronicle of T h e o p h a n e s the Confessor give no more than a fragmentary picture of Byzantine social structure. In spite of this, n o detailed analysis of the C a n o n s has been d o n e . T h e following discussion will concentrate on the Canons relating to paganism, heresy, and the consequences of the Arab and Bulgar invasions.
