ResumoDid Music of the Future, which involved Richard Wagner, Franz Liszt, and their followers, concern musical style or was it actually a political party? Wagner’s anti-Semitic views, first made public in an unsigned racist article in the Neue Zeitschrift für Musik (1850), have been well documented in the modern literature, but those of others largely remain to be explored. The editor of the Neue Zeitschrift für Musik, Franz Brendel, promoted Music of the Future and was himself supported financially by Liszt, whose inner circle indulged in activities that disparaged non-aligned musicians. Liszt sought to include Hector Berlioz in the movement, but Berlioz refused after learning about its aims, and staked out his position in the French press. A hostile political environment clarifies actions and remarks by Johannes Brahms, Joseph Joachim, Eduard Hanslick, Otto Jahn, and Ludwig Bischoff, among others.
