Resumo

Introduction of bulky alkyl groups, such as isobutyl or neopentyl, into bulky esters or ketones is achieved with metallic strontium and alkyl iodides under mild conditions to afford the fully alkylated alcohols in better yields than those obtained when using the corresponding Grignard reagents. The strontium-mediated reagents have a powerful nucleophilicity, tolerance to steric hindrance, and suppress undesired side reactions. In this artwork, “Strontium” is used as red flash of fireworks. The shadowgraph at the bottom of the picture is Tokushima dancing festival “Awa Odori”, which is one of the most famous dancing festivals in Japan. More information can be found in the Communication by Norikazu Miyoshi and co-workers on page 821 in Issue 7, 2017 (DOI: 10.1002/ajoc.201700209).
