Contemporary country singer Reba McEntire and musical theatre singer Bernadette Peters are compared with Ethel Merman in their performances of Anne Get Your Gun. This paper offers a historical overview of all three women, their careers, and their unique vocal sounds. Using descriptions of each woman’s vocal quality and musical recordings, the paper then briefly examines how analysis like the spectrum software program VoceVista™ can offer tangible explanations for performance styles, similarities, and differences.
