ResumoBased on the study of the papers of Danish Egyptologist H. O. Lange, Fredrik Hagen and Kim Ryholt have produced a very engaging examination of the antiquities market in Egypt in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Lange created an enormously rich body of material upon which Hagen and Ryholt have imaginatively and thoughtfully drawn. The detailed diaries produced by Lange on his purchasing trips to Egypt make for fascinating reading, leaving us with a mine of information on the way Egyptian antiquities were traded at a key period in the development of the discipline. Hagen and Ryholt have examined these papers in depth, discussing their importance in the context of the export market at the time and providing a unique portrait of a thriving industry. Their account of the range of dealers operating in Egypt, both official and illegal, is augmented with an immensely useful biographical list of over 250 dealers working in Egypt in the period.
