Street light control and management has an important role in nowadays societies, providing comfort and security to the citizens. Citizens demands more street lighting and street light operators look for the balance between the citizen's demand and affordable solutions. The Portuguese distribution system operator, EDP Distribuição (EDPD), acts widely under municipally concessions, as the main responsible body for street lighting management in Portugal. Smart IP is a partnership between EDPD and EFACEC to provide a reliable system to monitor and control street lighting in the national grid. This study presents an architecture overview and some details about the implementation of the central management system.
