ResumoThe greatest thing in this world is not so much where we stand as in what direction we are moving.—Johann Wolfgang von Goethe As we come to the end of 2017, we would like to thank all who have contributed to the success of the Journal of Vascular Surgery (JVS). We started our journey as Editors with a new editorial team in July 2016, and we knew from the beginning that this journey would be challenging. The world of medical publishing is rapidly evolving, but we also understood that the steepness of the hill “only adds to the joy and glory to the climb”. Comments and critiques that we received have been overwhelmingly favorable, as have the metrics that we have monitored. However, to paraphrase Goethe, as we end the year, we celebrate not where we stand but the direction toward which the JVS Publications are moving. JVS completes its 34th year with this issue. It has been the official publication of the Society for Vascular Surgery from the beginning and is now part of a suite of publications that includes the Journal of Vascular Surgery: Venous and Lymphatic Disorders (JVS-VL), the official Publication of SVS and the American Venous Forum (AVF), and the Journal of Vascular Surgery: Cases and Innovative Techniques (JVS-CIT), which will indexed and available on PubMed Central in the coming weeks. Through these journals, we are committed to supporting vascular surgeons and other vascular specialists, researchers and trainees, including members of ten sponsoring vascular societies listed below: American Venous Forum Canadian Society for Vascular Surgery Eastern Vascular Society Midwestern Vascular Surgical Society New England Society for Vascular Surgery Society for Clinical Vascular Surgery Society for Vascular Surgery Southern Association for Vascular Surgery Vascular and Endovascular Surgery Society Western Vascular Society Each of the JVS Publications has attained a prominent position among academic surgical journals by presenting the latest research and education related to the prevention, investigation, diagnosis, and management of vascular diseases. Our journals have published many important papers related to the evolution of vascular disease management into endovascular technology as well as new research related to aortic pathologies, peripheral arterial disease, venous and lymphatic disorders, vascular access, and wound care. The journals have also supported our readers who contribute to the journals by reporting on unique cases and describing innovative techniques. Today, the Journal of Vascular Surgery has a circulation of 4410, with online monthly visits close to 50,000 and an Impact Factor that increased from 3.454 to 3.536. JVS is an international journal receiving submission from 52 countries in 2017; 55% of submitted manuscripts come from abroad with the most frequent non-U.S. manuscripts sent from China, Japan, Italy, and The Netherlands. We thank our international authors and reviewers for their valuable contributions. Many of the changes we have implemented improve dissemination of the ever-increasing volume of information our journals provide. Each issue of JVS is accompanied by a video summary from the Editors. These videos summarize selected papers, including the Editors’ Choice, that can be downloaded free of charge that month. Summaries are inserted in the Table of Contents and “Highlights” can now be found in each clinical and basic research paper to help readers find the articles that interest them more quickly. Assistant Editor Dr Paul DiMuzio is pioneering the journals’ social media efforts on Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter, reaching 10,000 professionals worldwide on LinkedIn alone. Dr DiMuzio has also started a virtual JVS journal club and works diligently with the SVS staff to promote JVS news releases. As we complete another successful year, we believe that the state of the Journal of Vascular Surgery is strong and, more importantly, we are moving in the right direction. We express our deep gratitude to our readers, authors, reviewers, editors, staff, and publisher for their many contributions – the JVS Publications would not be successful without you! We wish you and your families all the best for the Holiday Season and a healthy and prosperous New Year of 2018. Scholarly peer review is the most important process to assure the high quality of a scientific publication. Introduced more than 300 years ago in The Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society. Peer review validates research, acts as a quality control filter, and many times greatly improves the content of a submitted manuscript. During 2017, 411 reviewers helped the Editors of the JVS journal to make important decisions on the fate of more than 1400 manuscripts. For so generously providing their talent, time, and effort, we are extremely appreciative of the contributions of so many expert peer reviewers. We would like to acknowledge our Associate and Assistant Editors, who have worked with us tirelessly in 2017 to raise the quality of the JVS journals. Drs Thomas L. Forbes and Fred A. Weaver served as Clinical Studies Editors of the Journal of Vascular Surgery and they have done an outstanding job to screen clinical research papers, direct the review process, and make important decisions on hundreds of manuscripts. After 7 years of outstanding service to the Journal, our Basic Science Editor, Dr Peter K. Henke, will complete his assignment in 2017. We are grateful for his dedication and expert contributions and we express our gratitude for a job so well done. Our new Basic Science Editor, Dr Alan Dardik will start his assignment in January of 2018. Welcome Dr Dardik. SVS President Dr Ronald M. Fairman served as our Review Editor. Systematic reviews and meta-analyses are essential to ensure great impact of a journal and we thank Dr Fairman for his enthusiasm and determination to dedicate his efforts to strengthen the section of reviews in our journal. In 2018, this role will be assumed by Dr Michael C. Dalsing, who excelled as Editor of Abstracts and Book Reviews. We are currently searching for an Assistant Editor of Vascular Vantage Point, a new section for review and commentary of key articles, and of Book Reviews. In 2017, Dr Paul J. DiMuzio joined us as the new Editor for Social Media and Press Releases. With the help of Dr Daniel Han, Dr DiMuzio largely increased our online readership by active participation in LinkedIn, Facebook, and Twitter. We are grateful to Drs DiMuzio and Han for their pioneer efforts to introduce JVS to the world audience of public media. We had a busy Editorial Board in 2017 and we greatly appreciate their important contributions to our peer-review process. In addition to reviewing and re-reviewing a large number of original articles, our editorial board members frequently contributed to JVS with commentaries and editorials. Members of the Editorial Board perform an average of 20 reviews each year and during 2017, this accounted for 34% of all the reviews performed. The Editors would like to recognize the significant contributions of the following Editorial Board members who, after many years of valuable service, will be retiring from the Board this month. We also would like to welcome all new members of the Editorial Board of JVS and JVS-CIT, who will start their assignments in January of 2018. Christopher J. Abularrage Mark A. Adelman Zachary M. Distinguished Reviewers contributed 35% of all reviews. We thank their efforts to assure a high-quality peer-review process. Ahmed M. Abou-Zamzam Joseph Patrick Archie Joshua David Arnold Robert G.
