ResumoPublic transportation of the Urban Community of Lille In order to increase the effectiveness of public transportation, an automatic lightweight metro system -the val -has recently been built in the Lille conurbation. Today, the urban network consists of 2 metro lines, 1 tramway line and 32 bus routes. Since the metro has been put into service, the traffic has rapidly increased, from 50 million passengers in 1982 to 95 million passengers in 1991. In 1991, trams and metro carried 58,5% of total traffic, and the buses took the remaining. A new stage in the improvement of the network is being realized with the modernization of the tramway and the extension of the metro to Roubaix and Tourcoing.
