Resumo

South American sea lions are stocky otariids that are strongly sexually dimorphic. They are widely distributed, occurring more or less continuously from northern Peru south to Cape Horn and north up the east coast of the South American continent to southern Brazil; they also occur in the Falkland (Malvinas) Islands. The South American sea lion has been referred to by the scientific name Otaria byronia (following Blainville 1820) and O. flavescens (following Shaw 1800). Recently, O. byronia has been selected as the earliest available name applicable with certainty.
