ResumoBurhi Gandak is a left bank tributary of Ganga which originates in the terai area of Chautarwa Chaur near Bhishambharpur, West Champaran district of Bihar. It is known as Sikrana in its upper reaches and receives the water from Masan and Ramrekha rivers. Sikrana is known as Burhi Gandak after the confluence of Dhanauti River near Motihari. It is one of the highly sinuous rivers of India. It exhibits point bars, natural levee, oxbow lake, meander scars, and abandoned channels. It is characterised by narrow channel confined within wide valley. Flooding is a recurring hazard in the Burhi Gandak river basin. After traveling a distance of about 400 km through West Champaran, East Champaran, Mehsi, Muzaffarpur, Samastipur, and Khagaria, it joins Ganga River near Gogri Jamalpur in Bihar.
