Resumo

Those of you who have children certainly know the feeling. You watch them grow and although you never know which way they are going to choose in life, any of their accomplishments also fill you with pride and happiness. I have the fortune not only to have two great kids which (ok, not always, after all they are kids…) make me happy and proud, but also being the editor of a journal, that continues to grow. And although Advanced Functional Materials clearly passed the 20-years mark, for me it still remains “my child” that you want to grow more and do more to maintain its place among reputable competitors. Thus, I am happy to concede that AFM is growing faster and stronger year by year. We have double-digit growth rates in submissions, the Impact Factor is developing positive. So, what more could we wish for? Well, there is not always just sunshine. Even if you think your kid is perfect, others might have a different view. And one of the criticisms my editorial colleagues and I heard from you quite frequently, was that you dislike our policy regarding color costs. Thus, I am really happy to tell you that there have been some exciting developments in the Advanced journal family. Effective immediately, as a result of declining publication in print, we will no longer ask authors to contribute to the costs for color figure reproduction across all Advanced journals, meaning that in Advanced Functional Materials but also in our other flagship titles Advanced Materials and Small you now can publish your papers in full color free of charge. For a family man, it is always good news when you see your family grow. Thus, I am thrilled to share the news with you that in 2018 the Advanced family will be extended with three new titles that may be of interest to your research activities: Advanced Theory and Simulations, Advanced Quantum Technologies, and Advanced Therapeutics. Advanced Theory and Simulations (www.advtheorysimul.com) will publish high-quality scientific results focusing on the development and application of theoretical methods, modeling, and simulation approaches in all natural science and medicine areas, including materials science, physics, chemistry, and engineering. Advanced Quantum Technologies (www.advquantumtech.com) will cover high-impact research in the fields of basic and application-related quantum-based communication, computation, control, engineering, information, metrology, optics, sensing, and simulation, as well as related areas, such as nanophotonics. Advanced Therapeutics (www.advtherap.com) will publish outstanding research on the next generation of therapeutics. The journal will provide an interdisciplinary forum covering key topics such as targeted drug delivery, cellular and genetic therapies, personalized medicines and theranostics, as well as pharmacology, toxicology, and drug discovery. These journals are now open for submissions and their editors would be more than happy to consider your work for publication. Managing the transition from print to online publishing continues to be a major issue and the key to success for any scientific publisher. Scientific results are published, shared and read nearly exclusively by electronic means. By addressing these needs, we have enhanced the functionality of the HTML version of your papers on Wiley Online Library, providing readers with a much more interactive experience compared to the traditional PDF format. For instance, all citations have become clickable, allowing you to find all bibliographic information in one go (Figure 1, left), including, if available at your institute, direct access to the full text of the reference through Wiley Online Library, CrossRef, PubMed, CAS, Web of Science, or ADS. These Anywhere articles further enable quick navigation through the different sections (Figure 1, right), as well as through all display items in the new figure viewer, and are suitable for reading on any screen of your choosing. In the digital age, online identity security is an important issue and while use of an ORCID identifier is currently recommended but optional, in a few months it will become compulsory for submissions to all Advanced journals. We therefore recommend that you register for your ORCID now (www.orcid.org) if you have not already done so. Let me finish by wishing you all the very best for 2018 in your scientific and personal endeavors, and by thanking you in advance for your continued support of Advanced Functional Materials. I have no doubt that with your outstanding research contributions the field and the journal will grow bigger and stronger, contributing to the advancement of the whole materials research community.
