ResumoThe main objective of this research is to evaluate the production system in Corrego Rico state settlement project, located in Jaboticabal town within the area encompassed by Ribeirao Preto, a city in the countryside in Sao Paulo State characterized by ethanol production. The settlement originated with the occupation of the Horto Florestal in Corrego Rico (a tree farm), in May, 1998, when nearly 50 families of landless rural workers, led by Feraesp (a rural worker trade union), occupied the area in their struggle for the agrarian reform. Most of these families were originally from Guariba, a small town also in the countryside in Sao Paulo State; among them, a number of rural workers participated in the widespread and highly significant strike movement known as boias-frias (rural workers), in 1984. Since the implementation of this settlement project, the settlers are taking up opportunities to develop an organic polyculture at that site, assigning a share of the production for consumption within the community and the surplus food is sold at market. In 2005, through a partnership with a cosmetics company located in Botucatu town, and in an area of 2.5 hectares, four family farmers have engaged in the popular jambu growing, a particular species of trees native to Amazon region and used in the cosmetics industry. Likewise, a partnership between this company and Horto Guarani settlement was also established. Furthermore, similar agreements were made between the settlement and other companies, as a food industry, to sell its guava production, and Farmanguinhos Laboratory, a Pharmaceutical Division of Oswaldo Cruz Foundation, for medicinal plant production. In addition, they have already exported okra and pepper to the European market under an agreement with a foreign import/export company established in Jaboticabal town. However, these partnerships did not succeed in accomplishing their goals. Keywords: Corrego Rico Settlement; Production System; ProductionDiversification; Partnerships System.
