Resumo

Cranio-encephalic trauma is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in young adults in Western countries. In Brazil, approximately 500,000 people need hospital care every year due to its occurrence. Of these, 15% to 20% die within a few hours, while another 15% develop irreversible loss of some neurological function. Among the main causes of TBI are automobile accidents. In this way, the Nucleus of Academic Studies in Neurosurgery, an outreach project of the Federal University of Ceara, in partnership with the Brazilian Society of Neurosurgery and the traffic department, carried out campaigns aimed at reducing the number of traffic accidents. The campaigns happened in two ways: adult prevention, aiming to intervention in traffic and pediatric prevention, aiming at correcting parental behavior and reducing the prevalence of the shaken baby syndrome. The first phase occurred annually, during the national traffic week, in educational blitz in places of high flow of people and vehicles; also by delivering explanations about national epidemiology and the location of the neurological lesions acquired in traffic accidents. We made use of informative and playful materials capable of clarifying important issues related to the theme. The second one was carried out in parallel to the first by using the educational blitz and a structure composed of informative banner, pamphlet, video with simulated accident, its repercussions and practical simulations with dolls to clarify the population about this theme. The results represent the knowledge of the population about the risk factors and the importance of preventive actions. There was an underreporting of the number of alcoholic driving drivers, based on DETRAN data that approximately 65% of motor vehicle crashes are caused by alcohol-use drivers, and seatbelt use was overestimated. Other mutable and immutable factors related to individuals are related to trauma indices and their severity, such as schooling, age and gender. Finally, in addition to generating statistical data for the elaboration of governmental proposals, we aim to stimulate the accomplishment of other extension activities with focus in the prevention of traffic accidents
