Granet-Abisset (Anne-Marie). — The Route Rein-vented. Eléments Concerning the Migration of Queyrassins in the Nineteenth Century. Like ail high valleys, the Queyras has long known seasonal migration and permanent émigration, seemingly in response to the imperative need for survival. Such is the interprétation of the collective memory, which, furthermore, gives priority recollection to certain destinations, either within France (Marseille, Lyon and Toulon) or in foreign countries (South America, and Mexico in particular). Analysis of written sources (notariés' minutes, civil records, passport lists) shows important discrepancies between the facts recollected and the real destinations, which are much more numerous and varied than is acknowledged. Thus, within France, inner Provence, Languedoc, the Dauphiné, and Paris should be added to the cities cited above, and for foreign destinations, Brasil, Chili, and Argentina are preferred over Mexico. Finally other European countries, such as Italy, Germany, or Spain, or lands elsewhere in the world, such as North Africa or Turkey, are completely missing from narratives. This study attempts to understand the reasons for this selectivity of memory. It seems the emphasis is on the more visible signs of success in émigration, according to an essentially familial tradition. Le Monde alpin et rhodanien, 4e trimestre 1991, pp. 7 à 29.
