Abstract: The Portuguese dictatorship of Oliveira Salazar was a corporatist fascist regime whose propaganda structures were very much involved in the creation and consolidation of the New State (1933-1974). Salazar's political project and his propagandistic discourse were based on notions drawn from his extremely conservative thinking. His Catholic beliefs regarding God and Family as well as the patriotic tradition were the principal ideas of his political discourse. In order to involve the Portuguese people in his ideological model, the New State's Department of Propaganda and its official newspaper, the Diário da Manhã, organized systematic campaigns to promote Salazarist arguments. By analyzing his most popular political aphorisms from the beginning of the New State, this article attempts to examine the rhetorical techniques used by Salazar to transform himself into the great leader of Portugal.
