Resumo

The agroforestry systems (AFS) have great potential for family farms as the diversification of production, adding value to agricultural products and sustainable maintenance of the properties. However, there are few studies that scientifically validate the use of such systems. Faced with this need, this study aimed to carry out socio-economic and technical-productive diagnosis in three properties that use AFS, in the Vale do Riveira region of Sao Paulo. It was observed that the families interviewed employ SAF in part of their properties and had the support of Cooperafloresta (Association of Agroforestry Farmers of Barra do Turvo and Adrianopolis) in the management of their areas and marketing of products. The AFS generate income considered satisfactory by farmers (~ 500.00 ha-1 month 1) being similar to other tillage systems. There is still a range of challenges to be faced for the full development of these production systems. Among these, the prevailing lack of skilled labor and the difficulty of diffusion of technologies adapted to local conditions.
