Resumo

Objective : To document the issue and current state of the illegal wildlife trafic and the implications to the biodiversity conservation in the northeastern region of Colombia. Methodology : It was gathered in a database the records of the species con scated by the O ce of Control and Surveillance of CORPONOR and the Environmental Police of Cucuta, among 2012 and 2017. Also, we reviewed the internal documen tation associated to the con scation, we carried out semi-structured interviews (n=87) in 15 municipalities of the department. Due to the nature of the data obtained, we applied a descriptive analysis. Results : In total over the past 6 years 236 specimens were recorded as illegal trafic, corresponding to 44 species, being birds, mammals and reptiles the most tra cked groups (66 % and 22% respectively). From the 44 species recorded as tra cked, 13 species are endangered; 6 are in the Appendix I and 1 in the Appendix II of CITES. Conclusions : It is evident the lack of systematic controls and suitable gathering of information, which could be making worse the situation, even more in border areas where people can easily transport these species. We emphasize the importance of strengthen the activities related to the wildlife trafic control and mitigation to generating educative strategies help to reduce this threat to the conservation of biodiversity and ecosystems in the region.
