Resumo

The article features dairy production in the municipality of Tailândia, northeast Pará, from data on the producer socio-economic profile, production systems, marketing, associativity, technical assistance and rural credit, obtained in 49 dairy properties.Farmers average age was 52.5 years, with low level of education and over ten years of experience. The majority (73.5%) live in the property, and come from the Northeast.Milk production is the main activity, among other rural and urban nature, which complement the income of producers. There is significant participation of family members in activities with little hired labor. The average property yield was 5 liters/cow/day, with an average lactation period of 6 to 8 months. The traditional system is predominant in the properties, although 79.6% use rotational management and only 6.12% use forages. In the dry season, 34.7% supplement the herd with rice bran, corn, soybeans and wheat, cassava and palm oil waste.Sanitary measures include the application of foot-and-mouth disease vaccine, as well as prevention against parasites and worms. There is no reproductive control and planning, which negatively affects the development of production.Milking is performed manually in a covered corral, once a day and only 34.7% of the properties have running water on site for hygiene of food handlers, utensils and animals.Due to the suspension the municipal dairy activities, the production of dairy products is piped to the informal trade, which sets up a public health problem.Only 20.4% of the producers have private technical assistance and most producers (51.0%) had no access to financing. The lack of information, technical assistance and investment in dairy production generates low productivity and product quality.
