ResumoAbstract This paper studies the motivations that trigger tourists' choice of visiting one specific archaeological site among those that exist in the Vesuvius area in southern Italy where, alongside some “superstar” archaeological attractors (Pompeii and Herculaneum), some less renowned sites (Oplontis, Stabiae, and Boscoreale) also exist. Based on data collected through an original survey, this paper proposes an empirical analysis aimed at investigating the correlation that exists between motivations for the visit and the site chosen among those existing in the Vesuvius area. The results contribute to the expanding literature focusing on motivations of cultural and heritage tourism.
