The mother reports seeing the lesion a few hours ago when the child returned home from a 2-day visit with his father. She says the father noted the mark 2 days earlier, and asked her if the child was allergic to socks. The parents have been separated since the child’s birth and share custody of their son. The treating physician notes a “bright red lesion” on the right leg posteriorly that is “sharply marginated,” photographs the lesion (Fig), and documents the lesion as suspicious for “nonaccidental trauma with an electric cord.” A report is made to Child Protective Services.
