ResumoWe report the synthesis of xCuO/TiO2-ZrO2 catalysts containing 1, 5 and 10 wt % CuO by the sol-gel method. The solids were dried at 100 °C for 24 h and calcined at 400 °C for another 24 h in an open-air atmosphere. Part of these samples was impregnated with 0.5 wt % of PtO by the wet impregnation method. Samples were characterized by H2-TPR, TPD-CO2, SEM, TEM, XRD and 2-propanol decomposition. Our H2-TPR results indicate that Pt impregnation on the xCuO/TiO2-ZrO2 system promotes the CuO reduction at lower temperature close to 190 °C. UV–Vis bands were associated with isolated Cu2+ ions in octahedral coordination corresponding to CuO particles; and isolated Cu2+ ions in coordination lower than octahedral. Pt impregnation on the surface of the xCTZ samples promotes new basic sites appearing at high temperature as confirmed by TPD-CO2. The higher conversion for the decomposition of 2-propanol to acetone shows that the basic properties of the CuOxPtOx/TiO2-ZrO2 catalysts are superior to those of CuOx/TiO2-ZrO2 samples.
