Resumo

Following an ambiguous constitutional compromise for democratisation, the territorial decentralisation of the Spanish state developed, under low levels of formal institutionalisation, by means of political party competition, exchanges and bargaining. Recent developments include, on one side, attempts at recentralising the state and, on the other side, demands and mobilisations for Catexit, that is, the independence of Catalonia from Spain, which have resulted in sustained inter-territorial conflict. This article analyses these recent political changes as the result of competitive strategies of extremist party leaders, working within the opportunities and incentives offered by a loose institutional framework.
