ResumoSchool of Dentistry, Kaohsiung Medical University, celebrates its diamond anniversary (August 2017). Sixty years ago, the School of Dentistry is the first institution providing dental education in the south of Taiwan. The School has offered the Bachelor of Dentist degree since the establishment of the School. In addition, post-graduate study leading to Master of Science (MS) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degrees were initiated in 1985 and 1990, respectively. Based on the successful achievement in the development and promotion of Medical Device, Ministry of Education supported the special grant tso establish the PhD program in the field of Medical Device. To date, we have more than 4500 students graduated from School of Dentistry, and most of the graduates have successful careers, either domestically or overseas in clinical practice, research institutes and academia. Recently, in order to show their gratitude to the department, the alumni have established an educational endowment foundation to facilitate teaching and research related activities of the department. Energetic research and development in dentistry is essential for improving oral health and overall quality of life. Dental researchers have expanded rapidly in recent decades and now encompass many fields, including basic medical science, clinical medicine, and biomaterials and bioengineering. The rapid development and integration of emerging technologies, such as biomaterials, imaging processing, informatics, computational simulation, modern biology, basic medical science, translational and clinical medicine, have revolutionized and expanded the technologies applicable in modern dentistry. In the celebration of 60th anniversary, School of Dentistry invited the outstanding alumni to contribute their research to publish the papers in Special Issue on Dental Research. These alumni are the faculty of Chung Shan Medical University (Taiwan), University of Pennsylvania (USA), Kaohsiung Medical University (Taiwan), University of North Carolina (USA), Charles Sturt University (Australia), National Yang Ming University (Taiwan), Indiana University (USA), respectively.
