IMGs graduate in one country and subsequently practice in another, at various levels of experience and seniority. The move to a new location, frequently with a different system of health care, language and culture, is challenging. These doctors require support and mentoring in order to provide optimal care while adjusting to their changed circumstances. The authors of this toolbox provide practical advice on the support required for IMGs to make the transition to their new workplaces, based on an intervention that they have delivered in the north east of England. They discuss how important it is to base any such intervention on the needs of the IMGs, as these may vary depending on their country of origin and prior learning. Adequate supervision is required, and those who supervise also need support. The aims of programmes for IMGs include enhancing patient safety and career progression. The recommendations provided are applicable to all health care professionals who take advantage of the opportunities for working away from home. Funding: The University Hospital of North Tees funded the research. Conflict of interest: None. Acknowledgements: None. Ethical approval: Ethical approval was obtained from Durham University, School of Medicine, Pharmacy and Health.
