ResumoPolymer gears are used in power and motion transmission work under different loads and speeds. In the current scenario, metal gears have been replaced by plastic gears in various applications. Plastic gears have less weight and produce less noise as compared to metal gears. In this work, glass fiber reinforced polypropylene (PP) gears are manufactured by conventional technique as well as horizontal centrifugal casting technique. PP material reinforced with 15 wt.% and 30 wt.% glass fibers are used to fabricate gears. Gear made by conventional technique is known as homogeneous gear. Functionally graded materials (FGMs) based PP gears are fabricated with horizontal centrifugal casting technique. The aim of this work is to investigate and compare the noise emission from homogeneous and FGMs gears during operation. Gears are run for 0.2 million cycles at various torque and speed combinations. The range of the speed is 500 – 1400 rpm. The torque range is 0.8 – 2.6 Nm. A polymer gear test rig is used for experimental work. Sound power levels are recorded and analyzed for various running combinations of fabricated gears.
