ResumoSadat and Siraj al-Din-the president and the pasha-had confronted each other once before. Back in 1953 the young Anwar al-Sadat was one of the three military judges at the show trials designed to expose and destroy the politicians of the old regime. Fuad Pasha Siraj al-Din, the strong man of the Wafd Party, seemed the ideal target. Conservative, rich, corpulent, Siraj al-Din was almost a caricature of the old regime pasha, and his political destruction would cripple the Wafd. The trial began in December 1953, but the big man proved an elusive target:
