ResumoThe Trienio liberal (1820-1823) was a time of great ideological conflicts within the Spanish liberalism. These conflicts revolved many times on the reading and implementation of the Constitution of 1812. The moderate group, also called doceañista, gambled on an implementation agreed with the forces of the Ancien Régime in order to take part in the new political game. In the meantime, the exalted liberalists wanted to take advantage of this historical moment to strengthen the revolutionary liberalism relying on the force that gave the patriotic societies and urban groups. In this context, the restorer of the Constitution, Rafael del Riego, was considered as an unalienable myth for both trends and was the subject of a string of attacks by the moderates, who were the greater part of this period in Government.
