Resumo

This article seeks to address questions regarding the different options taken by some of the main Greek city‐states against the frequent Macedonian intervention during the early days of the Hellenistic period. Two examples have been selected for their emblematic status and for being illustrative of opposite responses to similar situations: the military Greek resistance against Alexander, with a special emphasis on the upheaval of Agis of Sparta; the political rise and subsequent acceptance of Antiochus I by the Ionian cities (on the coast of Asia Minor).
