Resumo

The geology of the westernmost part of the Barro Alto Complex is reviewed in the light of more detailed mapping and petrographic work. The complex is thrusted over Archean tonalitic basement and it is íntruded by younger granitoids. Its rocks are formed by hypersthene-bearing granulites derived from (a) a plutonic suite of banded gabbro-norites, (b) massive intrusive gabbros and díorítes, and (c) a supracrustal suite of mafic to felsic volcanics interlayered with chert, íron fonnation, pelite and calc-sílícate rocks. This is tentatively separated from the younger(? ) and similar Serra da Malacacheta Sequence of layered mafic plutonics metamorphosed ínto garnet amphibolites, which upgrades into the Juscelândia metavolcanic-sedímentary Sequence. The Araxá Group is limited to a dull pile of chlorite-moscovite schists thrusted up both sequences.
