Resumo

This article uses multiple methods to direct attention to lived experiences, empirical research, and historical accounts of ‘real’ and detrimental consequences of omnipresent, stereotypical Indian mascots on the identity of Native Americans today. In particular, our focus is the impact and influence on the perceptions of tribal leaders working in the capacity of their constituents. This study analyzes data from media sources on five sports teams’ mascots and names: Atlanta Braves, Chicago Blackhawks, Cleveland Indians, Kansas City Chiefs, and the Washington Redskins. Many Native nations have corporate interests, and the continued use of stereotypes affects the ability and credibility of tribal leaders representing these enterprises as well as our communities and other interests. This article’s contribution is to postcolonial theory, tribal critical race theory, identity, and tribal leadership.
