Resumo

The presence of reservoirs in Paraná Basin, at great depth, was uncertain until last researches carried out in it, New deep wells drilled in the basin have shown sandstones from Rio Bonito and Itararé formations with good porosity and permeability, and in some cases gas bearing. The porosity can reach 15% at 4600m (about 15000 ft). Petrographic studíes using blue epoxy impregnation and SEM analysis have pointed ou that most of thís porosity is secondary, developed by díssolutíon of carbonatic cements and unstable rock fragments. The leaching of carbonatic cements and unstable rock fragments is related to ínterstítíal CO 2 - rich water. The main source of CO 2 ís the organíc matter maturatíon, but in Paraná Basin it would be also assocíated with the great mesozoic volcanic actívity, which ocurred as lava flows and intrusions. The relationshíp between igneous intrusions and CO 2 source can lead to the conclusion that secondary porosity and consequentely the gas generation in Paraná Basin would be mesozoic.
