ResumoHockey great Wayne Gretzky said, "Skate to where the puck will be, not to where it has been." Concerned by the lack of dental expertise in positions of policy leadership in federal agencies, the American Dental Association and 13 other organizations have urged the US Department of Health and Human Services "to prioritize hiring a chief dental officer or dentist clinician in a position of authority [at the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services] to oversee oral health issues in Medicare and Medicaid."1 The Agency for Healthcare Quality and Research, which supports innovations in health care quality and performance, also has not had full-time dental expertise for well over a decade.
