Resumo

PJ Harvey released two albums in 1993: a studio album produced by Steve Albini entitled Rid of Me, and an album of previously-recorded home demo tapes of the same material entitled 4-Track Demos. This article uses the concept of production myth to analyze differences in meaning and reception between the two releases. It addresses issues of lo-fi, gender, and technological control in the surrounding discourse, showing how these concepts interacted to help shape critical reception and potential meanings heard in specific aspects of the recorded sound.
