ResumoThis paper analyzes the coverage of the Recife newspaper Jornal do Commercio of the popular demonstrations related to the impeachment of Dilma Rousseff conducted in 2016, based on the hypothesis that there was a systematic distortion of the news media to produce a pathological pseudo-consensus for the purpose to legitimize the parliamentary coup. The research developed a qualitative quantitative metho dology combining the methods of Content Analysis and Discourse Analysis. Specifically, the paper sought to verify the position of the newspaper about the demonstrations, evaluating how the political dis- putes were framed, and verified the hypothesis of criminalization of protests against impeachment in the judgments of value emitted in the matters.
