ResumoPostpartum depression is characterized by the magnitude of mood symptoms that occur in the postpartum period. The attention provided by the nursing team and patient's family is extremely important to recognize the disorder. This research has a qualitative approach and exploratory feature. The main goal was to identify the 1425 nurses' ability to acknowledge and avoid postpartum depression. The data were collected from a maternity hospital between June and July 2017.Nurses who work in this maternity in Cariacica-ES were submitted to a semi-structured interview. The data analysis was based on Bardin's content analysis. Results showed that nurses understand the disease, however, they have limited knowledge about signs and symptoms. This difficulty is due to a work overload that hinders health care.It still lacks a professional psychologist support. It is suggested a reconstruction of work, support for continuing education, additional studies about this subject and to perform the Nursing Process.
