ResumoThe variability of irritant reactions requires that irritants be thought of as having a range of concentrations that produce reactions. The concept of an ID50 helps to keep some of these variables in mind. Individuals may have altered irritant thresholds because of eczematous dermatitis elsewhere, strongly positive patch tests, and factors that enhance percutaneous penetration. Knowledge of how these variables alter the ID50 for any given irritant will aid in the proper assessment of clinical irritant dermatitis.
