Resumo

After a genealogy of the last interview, within the framework of what art historian Peter Geimer has called "the dramaturgy of the last," two staged last interviews, with Jacques Derrida and Dennis Potter will be analyzed in more detail. These interviews, which took place in 2004 and 1994, respectively, were remarkable media events that reveal profound changes in the subgenre as a cultural practice. In my reading, the main focus is on the last interview as a subgenre of the literary interview. I will examine how the specific scenography and editing of these interviews has to respond to ethical and aesthetic questions raised by the practice. Moreover, the last interview has to manage the strong affective charge attached to it, while taking into account the specific temporality and performativity of a dying person's last public address.
