ABSTRACT In recent decades, there has been a growing prevalence worldwide of cesarean section operations in relation to normal births. Brazil is included in this environment, justifying its title of world champion in the category, for not complying with the recommendations of the World Health Organization (WHO), which has been advocating since 1985, that the incidence of cesarean deliveries should be less than 15%. . Objective: To compare the number of live births by cesarean section and vaginally at the 4th Imperatriz-MA Regional Health Region during 2015 and 2016. Methods: Descriptive, retrospective and documentary quantitative approach, collected in the Health Surveillance sector. , from the 4th Regional Health of Imperatriz-MA, from 2015 to 2016. Results: The study showed a percentage of live births by caesarean section greater than 50% of total cases, this draws attention to public health, and the Analysis of the difference between the means of live births by vaginal and cesarean section through the Student test showed a p> 0.05 in both evaluated years, reaffirming the descriptive statistics data. Conclusion: These analyzes become relevant because they showed that the prevalence of cesarean section birth in some regions is significant and should be better observed by health authorities, preventing these numbers from growing in a disorderly manner within the state.
