ResumoThe objective of this article is to describe the pathology of the most frequent gastric neoplasms and their precursors. The majority of gastric tumors are adenocarcinomas (approximately 88%), followed by lymphomas (3%) and leiomyosarcomas (1.7%). These neoplasms have been the subject of diverse classifications by individual investigators and international bodies. A brief mention of the different classifications of adenocarcinomas is made and is followed by a more detailed description of those considered more relevant. The new “epidemic” of tumors of the cardia is discussed. The advent of endoscopic techniques has directed attention to adenocarcinomas limited to the mucosa and submucosa, to which the terms early and superficial have been applied. They are considered separately. Gastric lymphomas and leiomyosarcomas also are considered.
