ResumoPure phase misfit Ca-cobaltite powder, [Ca2CoO3−δ]q[CoO2] (C349), was successfully synthesised by the proteic sol-gel synthesis route and characterised by X-ray diffraction. The electrochemical performance of the C349 cathode screen-printed onto Ce0.9Gd0.1O1.95 (GDC) solid electrolyte was studied employing electrochemical impedance spectroscopy in 3-electrode cell configuration. Cathodic polarisation was evaluated in potentiostatic mode in the temperature range 550–700 °C. The C349 cathode prepared by proteic sol-gel synthesis route demonstrates lower polarisation resistances than similar misfit Ca-cobaltite compositions reported in the literature, produced by different synthetic approaches. A highly competitive performance of the formed C349 cathode is also highlighted upon comparison to typical SOFC cathodes under applied DC bias.
