Resumo

In the present work, MCNPX and Geant4 have been used to calculate the mass attenuation coefficient of 26.66 B2O3–16GeO2–4Bi2O3–(53.33–x) PbO–xPbF2 (x = 0, 15, 30, 40 mol %) glasses at 0.122, 0.356, 0.511, 0.662, 0.84, 1.17, 1.275 and 1.33 MeV photon energies. The obtained results have been compared with the findings of XCOM program and are found to be in good agreement. The obtained values of mass attenuation coefficient have been used to calculate effective atomic number, electron density and mean free path. The exposure build up factor has also been calculated in the energy range 0.015–15 MeV. The mean free path of the samples has been compared with standard shield concretes and other glass systems. The glasses are characterized by lower values of mean free path than standard shield concretes and other glass systems. Thus the selected glasses are established as good gamma shields. Among the prepared glasses; BPBG0 is found to be best one for shielding.
