ResumoThe association between type 1 diabetes and autoimmune thyroid disease is well described in the literature, and screening for thyroid disease in type 1 diabetics is clearly indicated, even if asymptomatic. Nevertheless, the presence of thyroid disorders is associated with both the worsening of glycaemic control in diabetics, and increases in the prevalence and severity of the complications related to the disease. Based on conflicting results from clinical studies, the correlation between type 2 diabetes and thyroid disorders is uncertain. Cost-efficiency data and longitudinal studies are scarce in the literature. As a result, the requirement to screen for thyroid disease in this population remains unclear. This cross-sectional study evaluated 120 asymptomatic participants (60 type 2 diabetic and 60 non-diabetic patients), without known thyroid disorder, through dosages of serum TSH. No statistical differences in plasma TSH levels were observed between the groups (p = 0.29), although a significant portion of asymptomatic diabetic individuals presented TSH abnormalities (8.33%). Based on studies of clinical outcomes, investigation of TSH abnormalities in type 2 diabetics could present benefits, due to the influence of this abnormality on glycidic profile and complications of diabetes, as well as its detection in a significant portion of asymptomatic diabetic individuals. Key-words: TSH, thyroid disease, type 2 diabetes.
