ResumoLocated on the east coast of the Yucatán Peninsula, Mexico, the Sian Ka'an area is a national biosphere reserve. It is an almost undisturbed complex hydrological system containing tropical forests, wetlands, mangroves, swamps, lagoons, beaches, dunes, sinkholes, and marshes, as well as a large marine section intersected by a barrier reef. The diversity of life in Sian Ka'an is exceptional. It is one of Mexico's largest protected areas, established to manage marine, coastal, and terrestrial ecosystems. The tropical forests are home to a great number of mammals. The site also provides habitat for a large number of resident and migratory bird species, and there is also a great diversity of marine life.
