The island of Fernando de Noronha, off the northeast Brazilian coast, was formed by volcanic peaks of a submerged mountain chain. The Atol das Rocas Island, located 150 km west of Fernando de Noronha, is the only atoll in the South Atlantic. They are formed by small islets and islands and accommodate the largest concentration of tropical seabirds to be found in the western Atlantic Ocean. Dolphin Bay, in Fernando de Noronha Island, hosts an exceptional population of dolphin, being the only known place in the world with such a large population of resident dolphins. Fernando de Noronha also contains the only oceanic mangrove in the South Atlantic region. Its surroundings have exceptional underwater landscapes, recognized worldwide as a special place for diving. Atol das Rocas, at low tide, provides a spectacular seascape of lagoons and tidal pools with fish, shellfish, sponges, mollusks, and corals.
